Have you been wondering how to use a prayer journal? Here are 6 tips on how to start a prayer journal.
I’ve been using a prayer journal since my college days and I discovered that the things I wrote down then are still very relevant today.
Furthermore, a prayer journal helps me to look back on my spiritual journey and measure my growth. Looking at the testimonies of answered prayers in my journal helps increase my faith and makes me feel closer to God.
So, I thought I would put this out there for someone who might need it.
What is a Prayer Journal?
A prayer journal is a tool for recording your communications and experiences with God.
There’s a popular quote that;
A dull pencil is better than the sharpest mind.
This is especially true in today’s fast-paced society where we have a lot going on in our mind and day. Facing traffic, meeting doctors’ appointments, dropping and picking the kids, having back to back meetings, coupled with keeping up with social media.
All these and more have made it difficult to maintain focus on the one thing that truly matters; our soul and eternity.
That is why the idea of using a prayer journal to help keep track of your prayer life is very good.
4 Benefits of Using a Prayer Journal
- As earlier stated, one key benefit of using a prayer journal is that you will have an easy point of reference for your communications with God.
- Journaling can be therapeutic. I’ve found that to be true for me as it helps me slow down and process my thoughts as I journal.
- Another benefit of using a prayer journal is that it will help you look back on your spiritual journey and measure your spiritual growth.
- A prayer journal not only chronicles your communications with God, but it also has the potential to boost your faith as you revisit your prayer requests and read testimonies of answered prayers.
6 Tips for Starting a Prayer Journal
- Be deliberate: By this I mean, deliberately set apart a time every day that you would be with the Lord. The time can be as short as fifteen minutes or thirty or an hour. Choose a duration and frequency that works for you. The important thing when you’re just starting is to set a routine. You can set an alarm so that you won’t forget the time. When you set a time, it helps you to be mentally prepared because then you’re looking forward to it.
- Practice Quietness: Go to a place where you can have some quiet from the normal buzzing of daily life. This would help you concentrate on listening to and hearing from God.
- Be ready: Be ready with your bible, prayer journal, pen, and highlighters. You don’t want to miss out on inspirational thoughts as they come. When you have your writing materials handy, it makes it easy to document your thoughts and messages received.
- Study the Bible: Study the bible, maybe a verse or a passage or a bible text at a time. If you’re the type that uses a devotional, read the Bible references in it. The key thing to note is that inspiration comes from meditating and mulling over the words you read.
- Meditate and Write: As you meditate, let your creative juices flow and begin to write down everything coming to mind. Mull over how the scriptural verses affect you, your children, your spouse, your career or business and your daily life. Think about the areas requiring change, maybe it’s a habit that needs to go or a miracle that needs to occur. Whatever it is, write down your thoughts and let your prayer requests offshoot from there. Don’t hesitate to put down any other prayer request you want to make to the Lord. Afterall, He is our father and His ears are not deaf to answer us.
Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; Isaiah 59:1 (ESV)
- Testify: As you begin to receive answers to your prayer, document your testimonies. This will serve as a valid reference point in the future. Testimonies are useful for encouraging us in our faith, especially when faced with difficult situations. Because when we go back and read those testimonies, then our faith will be boosted that God can and will do more.
As you journal, never forget that you are a Royal Diadem, Beautiful in God’s Hands.
