Unending Love and Soul Ties – David and Jonathan

Unending love and soul ties is possible between people.

Love is sweet, sweeter than honey from the honeycomb. Though it is an emotion that rages like fire, many waters cannot quench love.

Being in love is sweet and altogether lovely, love sees no flaws. Love is like when a man or woman takes alcohol, or a strong substance and they are intoxicated. It is intoxicating, turning the strongest of hearts to jelly. Many a person of authority have been subdued and become servants of love. A man or woman can do anything for love.

No wonder Argur (Prov 30:19) said one of the things too wonderful for him to comprehend is the way of a man with a woman. It is difficult to describe love because our experience, understanding and emotion about it differs.

But there are certain characteristics of true love that are standard or ought to be.  True love is patient, kind, keeps no record of wrong, does not boast etc. The scripture below accurately describes all the characteristics of true love.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 ESV)

These are the characteristics of true love.
Being loved gives us a good feeling about ourselves, as we all want to be loved in that special way. I remember growing up, thinking my mother didn’t love me because she was very strict. This thought used to sadden and make me cry well into high school.

But, I was lucky to have friends who made up for whatever lack of affection I felt from my mum. They readily consoled me and offered the much-needed emotional support. Those are good friends never to be forgotten, I was blessed to have them. We all need friends and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

unending love and soul ties - David and Jonathan

Soul Tie Between David and Jonathan

This brings to mind a similar friendship in the Bible; David and Jonathan. David was a shepherd boy in the backside of the desert, while Jonathan was a prince. But this didn’t deter their friendship, and they had genuine love for each other. Jonathan loved David to the extent that the Bible stated that his soul was knit with David’s soul. David and Jonathan had a soul tie.

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. (1 Samuel 18:1 ESV)

The love between them was so strong that Jonathan voluntarily gave David his weapons of war. His dream was to see David succeed and win many battles.

And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. (1Samuel 18:4 ESV)

This was highly significant at the time because David had just been recruited into Saul’s army, and he lacked those necessary weapons.

We would go on to see from 1 Samuel 20:30-34 that, Jonathan was prepared to forfeit the throne to David. He didn’t care for the throne, his reputation, lineage, he simply cared about David’s well-being.

It was clear based on indices that David was likely to become king after his father’s death, yet he loved David steadfastly.

King Saul, Jonathan’s father couldn’t comprehend his son’s love for David and this made him angry. He was so angry that he attempted to pin his son to the wall with a spear. Jonathan’s love for David wasn’t one-sided, it was well reciprocated by David.

David loved Jonathan in return and honored the covenant of friendship between them long after Jonathan passed on.

Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.  And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.”  And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” (2Samuel 9:5-7 ESV)

After Saul and Jonathan died, and David became king of Israel, he remembered the oath of friendship between him and Jonathan and favored Mephibosheth.

Now that’s the kind of friends we all should be proud to have and be.

I pray for you today that God will bring faithful friends like Jonathan your way.

God’s Unending Love For Us

May God bring faithful friend your way, but first allow me to introduce my own special friend to you.

He is a friend in need and in deed, a friend in good times and bad, a faithful friend. The type of friend willing to see you succeed and be the best you that can be. A friend that will dare to lay down His life for you.

I found such a friend and my life changed forever. He became my friend, confidant and steadfast lover of my soul. There is no variableness or shadow of turning with him. I met that friend twenty-three years ago and there has been no regret.

As a matter of fact, great things have happened to me from the time we met till now. He is the friend that sticks closer than a brother and His love is sweeter than honey. He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul, and that same friend is wanting to be your friend if you will let him.

His name is Jesus, the lily of the valley, the burden bearer and yoke destroyer.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us  (Romans 5:8  ESV)

Today, if you will hear his voice and open up your heart to Him, He will come in and be a friend to you. His love is like no other.

Below are seven scriptural verses to reassure you that you are loved. I dedicate these verses to all those who at one time or the other have sought and yearned for love. Know that God loves you and I love you too.

Love, you just reminded me of my teenage years, when just expectations of love kept me going, went through so many sad experiences, the worst when we lost my dad’s house, and almost on the street, but my mother’s love won’t let me go, love won’t let you go. I wish everyone about to let go of love can read this once, I met you love earlier than you 34 years ago, Jesus has been everything to me.

  2. Thanks Susan, David and Jonathan’s soul tie was long lasting even till after Jonathan’s death. What a faithful love David exhibited.
