Have you ever wondered what the bible says about the voice of the Lord?
In this post, I share 9 amazing things the bible says about the voice of the Lord and how we can utilize it.
Don’t misunderstand me, we can’t control the voice of the Lord but we can pray and ask God to thunder from heaven. God can thunder with His voice and His enemies will be scattered.
Growing up my parents each had their own way of making sure we towed the line as children.
For my mum, it was the sudden slaps and beating she gave us. And I learned early on how to interpret her facial expressions and adjust accordingly.
Her facial expression outside determined what your fate will be when you get inside. Either you’ll receive a pat on the back or you’ll receive the stick.
But my dad’s approach was different. Just a shout from my dad could make any child pee their pants.
The suddenness of the shout coupled with his stern posture would make us all scramble for safety.
Therefore I can relate with what the bible says about the voice of the Lord.
Characteristics Of The Voice of The Lord
The book of Psalms 29 shares some insight about the voice of the Lord.
The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; The God of glory thunders; The Lord is over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; The voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; Yes, the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, And Sirion (Mount Hermon) like a young, wild ox. The voice of the Lord rakes flames of fire (lightning). The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the doe labor and give birth And strips the forests bare; And in His temple all are saying, “Glory!” The Lord sat as King at the flood; Yes, the Lord sits as King forever. The Lord will give [unyielding and impenetrable] strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace. Psalms 29:3-11 (AMP)
Now let’s dissect the above Bible verses by reviewing the characteristics of the voice of the Lord and what it can do.

Have you noticed that the Bible often refers to the Cedar tree, especially the cedar of Lebanon?
In 2 Samuel 5:11, Cedar trees were used to build David’s house.
11And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.
And when it was time to build a house for God, Solomon sent a message to Hiram the king of Tyre. He requested that Hiram send him Cedar trees from Lebanon.
And behold, I propose to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spoke to my father David, saying, “Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for My name.”
Now therefore, command that they cut down cedars for me from Lebanon; and my servants will be with your servants, and I will pay you wages for your servants according to whatever you say. For you know there is none among us who has skill to cut timber like the Sidonians. 1 kings 5:5-6 (NKJV)
The Voice Of The Lord Can Break Cedar Trees Despite Their Strength
Similarly, the Bible compares the growth and prosperity of the righteous man to that of the cedar of Lebanon.
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; Psalms 92:12 – 14 (KJV)
All of these means that Cedar trees are strong, fat and flourishing.
One thing cedar trees are known for is longevity, another thing is durability.
Some online sources have said Cedar trees can live for about a 1,000 years.
That is how strong they are, yet they are not too strong that the voice of the Lord cannot break them in pieces.
No matter how long a Cedar tree 🌲 has lived, the voice of the Lord can break them in pieces.

What a very important message which is vital to where we end in our pursuit “The Voice of Lord”.
Yes! The voice of the Lord is POWERFUL, no wall of Jericho can withstand it.
There have been many times I have heard God speak. There is nothing like knowing that you have heard from God and are doing His will.
Amen! Yes, Anne, hearing God’s voice gives us peace of mind even when things take an unexpected turn.
I loved how you started off talking about your parents. I think all moms have that “look” that lets their kids know they are in for it! LOL! We serve a powerful God, who has a powerful voice! Thank you for sharing this!
You’re welcome MJ and thanks for stopping by.
I love this post and I love how you unpacked Psalms 29:3-11. I’ve never read a post on God’s voice before. His voice is both powerful and soothing to me. Love Him so much … ❤
Praise God for his greatness and His powerful voice that can turn our situations around for good.
A cedar tree is a part of a current piece I am writing and I loved the connections you made here between the splintering of wood and God’s voice. Whether generational or not God can change the story.
This so true Chavon, God has the power to change our story regardless of how long things have things gone on.
Loved hearing about how the bible talks about the voice of the Lord. I also really loved the insights into the cedar tree! It will help me when I come across any mentions of a cedar tree as I am reading God’s word to remember their strength and their submission to their Creator.
Thank you Colleen, God didn’t create anything that He can’t control but He chose to give us human beings a free will and not to impose on us. All other creatures submit to the Voice of God.
Thank you for expounding on this chapter and the voice of the Lord! His voice thunders but is also a still, small voice. At once powerful and comforting. Loved reading about your parents. Mine both had “that look” and trained us young to heed it! 😊
Thanks Teresa, isn’t it wonderful how our parents trained us?
One look and you scramble for safety. And as soon as God speaks, situations become calm and we gain clarity.
Love this reminder about the voice of the Lord, especially when you said “yet they are not too strong that the voice of the Lord cannot break them in pieces”. What an incredible image of the strength of God! Thank you!
Amen! Thank you for outlining what the voice of the Lord can do. Help us, Lord, to trust in You more and more.
Beautiful post. Of all the ways He speaks, that “still, small voice” I hear in my heart has got to be my favourite. ♡
On my book shelf I have a book by Gerald Lund titled: Hearing the Voice of the Lord: Principles and Patterns of Personal Revelation. I have experienced different ways God has spoken to me through personal revelation. Sometimes it is through a thought, an impression, or a sense of comfort and peace. On rare occasions it has been quite an audible voice that held power and authority and quite direct.
That passage about God’s voice just reminds me how powerful He is. I needed this reminder.
And yet He is that still, small voice calling to us… He is one amazing God. Thank you for sharing this wonderful message about God.
I love this post. He is mighty to save. Blessings, Joni
Every time I hear a thunderstorm I think about the verses that talk about God’s voice booming or roaring like thunder. It probably sounds weird but those are some of my favorite times to pray because it’s like, He’s already talking you know? Lol! I want to hear what He has to say.
Lol! I know what you mean.
I love thinking about the power in the voice of God! Such a great post and all the points you made. The voice of God directed Moses out of a burning bush, convicted hearts when the adultress woman was about to be stoned, and the voice of God spoke life and creation into the world in Genesis. Your article is such a great reminder of where our true power rests.
My spirit is so lifted reading about the voice of the Lord. How powerful and mighty our God is,yet so loving and tender towards us. God bless u for sharing.
Praise God! God’s voice is so powerful, so healing and it rescues us from all our troubles.
Thanks for this scripture about voice of God and about Cedar tree.
My spiritual level for certain level increase.
Be blessed Madam
