2 Important Facts About Destiny in the Bible
In this post, I will share 2 important facts about destiny in the bible.
What does the bible say about destiny? Has this question ever crossed your mind, and if it has what was your finding?
What is Destiny?
Often times people ask the question, what is destiny? Growing up, the topic of what destiny is and whether it can be changed or influenced always generated hot debates. I remember listening to radio programs about this interesting topic of destiny.
Some people believe that destiny cannot be changed while others strongly believe that destiny can be changed.
Destiny is a series of events or circumstances that can happen to an individual either now or in the future. These events are often described as unchangeable and it is deemed that the individual has no control over them. But we shall see that it is possible to take our destiny in our own hands.
What Does the Bible Say About Destiny?
God is Sovereign and He Determines our Destiny
God told Jeremiah that he was ordained as a prophet even before he was formed in the womb.
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NKJV)
And the Psalmist acknowledged God’s perfect knowledge of man and His predestination when he wrote;
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. Psalms 139:16 (NKJV)
It is evident from the bible verse above that God predetermines our destiny even when we were unformed in our mother’s womb.

To further corroborate the fact that God pre-determines our destiny, we read about God’s response to Rebekah when she inquired of Him;
… Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I like this?” So she went to inquire of the LORD.
And the LORD said to her: “Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger.” Genesis 25:21-23 (NKJV)
Before the twins Esau and Jacob were born at all, God revealed their destiny to their mother Rebekah. That one will be stronger than the other and the elder shall serve the younger.
I wrote more about this encounter in the post on bible verses to encourage a praying mother. If you’re out of steam and need encouragement to pray for your children, read the post.
And so we see that God pre-determined the destiny of the twins and declared that the elder will serve the younger. And it was so.
God Can Change a Man / Woman’s Destiny
God can change the destiny of a man/woman, but not only that, He can change the destiny of a whole nation.
There are examples throughout the bible of how God changed the destiny of the Israelites each time they sinned against Him.
Pin For Later
For example, He told the children of Israel through the prophet Jeremiah to desist from sin else they will be taken captive.
This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place. 4 Do not trust in deceptive words and say, “This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD!” 5 If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, 6 if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, 7 then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your ancestors for ever and ever. Jeremiah 7:3-7 (NIV)
But they did not heed God’s warning.
And because they refused to heed His warning, God gave them over to Nebuchadnezzar who banished them from their land. Therefore they became exiles in Babylon and God changed their destiny to be that of exiles for seventy years.
This much was communicated to the Israelites through the letter written by the prophet Jeremiah;
4 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” 8 Yes, this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. 9 They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the LORD. 10 This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. Jeremiah 29:4-10 (NKJV)
God’s original plan/destiny for the Israelites was that they will continually dwell in the land he gave their ancestors. A land flowing with milk and honey. But every time they sinned and went whoring after other gods, God changed their destiny.
Just as we see in the above bible verses that God amended their destiny. He amended their destiny to include being exiled for seventy years.

The choices we make can affect our destiny either for good or for bad. God has a good destiny for every human being He created but it’s all dependent on our choices.
We see in the above story of the Israelites that by choosing to live in sin and refusing to repent, their destiny was altered.
We will look at the second part of this topic in my next post. And review a biblical example of someone who had a destiny shift based on their choices.

Yes it is always the tension between God’s promises and our response – the covenant is a two way relationship – interesting post!
Thanks Sharon, yes our covenant with God requires our own input and effort. We can’t go to sleep simply because God has promised us a great destiny.
God bless you woman of God
Really interesting post. I guess I’ve never given much thought to destiny in the Bible. This was quite intriguing.
Such an interesting post, explaining how God determines our destiny from bible scripture and how our choices affect us – a great read
Thanks Dani, our choices definitely goes a long way.
God bless u and ur family for such an educative fact given to us.
Our choices affect our destiny for sure, that is why we need to consult God before we make any decisions.
Humm!! This is so true, and we must also live in the fear of God.
John R:
God gave us a free will not an uncontrollable destiny. Because we ‘don’t know the future and cannot change the past, God gives us only today (Psalm 118:24). We must yield to the Lord to guide our destiny and act responsibly to achieve our HOPE of HEAVEN one day at a time.
I loved this ::: “The choices we make can affect our destiny either for good or for bad. God has a good destiny for every human being He created but it’s all dependent on our choices.”
My hubby and I were just talking the othe day about how our choices shape our lives. God has done everything for us and it is up to us to cooperate with Him as He walks our destiny out with us.
Such a beautiful post sweet lady. Be blessed today … ❤
Thank you, sweet friend, and God’s blessings upon you too. Have a lovely week.
Hi! Thank you for writing this. Thank you for the wonderful reminder that God is Sovereign!
I really love how you tied this all into the Bible! Beautifully done.
I had never really considered destiny in this way before. Very interesting read. But yes, our choices matter and that is very humbling.
There are so many stories about destiny in the bible. You give us alot of important points to consider in the choices we are making toward our own God designed destiny. Thank you!
I really love this post. Thank you for sharing how our own decisions can change our life for good or bad. Blessings, Joni
Great post. Our God is really good to us, he has given us the freewill to make choices, however it is quite painful that people still make choices that can alter their destiny. Returning back to God for help, mercy and guidance is key. Thanks for sharing this very thoughtful provoking post.
You’re welcome, it is a wake-up call to me as well, to make sure I continually examine myself whether I’m still in the faith.
I’d never thought about destiny in the Bible, that God’s will and plan for me could be thought of as destiny. Thank you for this sobering reminder that our choices can change God’s plans for us, so that we miss out on the blessings He had planned. Blessings! 💗
Thank you for this encouraging article on destiny in the Bible. I think this was very eye opening especially seeing how the choices one makes has a huge impact on the destiny that God had chosen for His people. I love how you referenced the Israelites and showed what the Lord wanted for them but because of their disobedience their destiny was altered.
I have never thought about destiny in the bible like this. Thank you for breaking down what destiny is and how it can actually be changed. I actually JUST read those verses about Rebekah this morning and felt encouraged. God is in control and has great plans for our life. And wow do we need a change in destiny for our nation right now!
Thank you for such an encouraging post on destiny! It is so good to be reminded that ultimately God is in control 🙌🏻 It does my soul good to read through these verses. Thanks!
I agree that God controls our destiny. We can see this when we read about destiny in the Bible. Thank you for sharing this today!
Thanks for this reminder. May God help us choose wisely. Many blessings to you!
I love your statement that our choices affect our destiny. I tell my children all of the time that some of the choices they make today will affect them for a long time. Thanks for sharing!
I’m so very thankful that God’s plan for my life is only good and with an eternal ending. My choices can certainly impact the consequences and living in a sinful world deflects from God’s plan, but nevertheless, God has already paid the price for my eternity!
I believe that there are different kinds of destiny. There are certain plans of God that man cannot alter. But personal destiny can be altered by whether or not we obey God, which you’ve pointed out so well.
Such a thought provoking post! Thanks for showing how our decisions really do impact our destiny.
We can find our destiny in the bible. He has provided us His word for us to find Him and His plans for us. I pray I will make the right choices to stay in the destiny He has planned for me.
God has given us free will to choose. But we also must choose to trust and believe.
I couldn’t agree more Mamie, thanks for stopping by.
I love this… free will & predestination are a struggle for me to grasp, but you’ve got something here by looking at destiny in the Bible.
Yes, God has plans for us, but what we do and how we respond determines how long and hard that road will be -like Jonah 😉
I really enjoyed this post. I truly believe that God does have a destiny for us. I believe he gives us signs to take a certain path and we must listen to them in order to get to that original destiny he gave us!
Amen. Thanks Brie.
God has plans for us, we do our best and He will do the rest.
Definitely, God has no problem fulfilling His plans for us but we must know that we need to do our own part.
I find comfort in knowing God’s plans are greater than mine and will provide even in hard times. Great post!
Hey, I think your site might be having browser compatibility issues.
When I look at your blog site in Ie, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has

You are welcome, lol! Can you tell me what specific areas are you hoping to learn more about? What would you like me to write on?
I love this write up especially when you summed it up by saying ” Our choices can affect our Destiny and change the course of our lives.” And that is exactly my understanding and believe, God does not Change DESTINY it is us who gets derailed on the path to achieve what God has destined for us because of the choices we make. When we loose focus and we make choices that are not in line with Gods’ plan for us we face the consequences. These consequences depending on the individual will help you to learn, mature and understand the will of God for your life so that the individual will get back on track to journey towards destiny.
God does not change Destiny like you indicated, The choices we make if its good leads you to your Destiny if its bad will alter your path to your Destiny.
Awesome message!!!
