What Is Peace?

Peace is a stress-free state of calmness in the absence of disturbance, conflict, or war. It is also a state of mutual harmony between people or groups, especially in personal relations.

What Does It Mean to Have the Peace of God That Surpasses All Understanding?

To have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding means to be free from the burden of sin. When you are free from the burden of sin, you will experience an indescribable calmness from within. This is the calmness that rests upon every child of God at salvation. You don’t work for this kind of peace, but it descends upon you because you are in mutual harmony with God. Harmony with God because you who were once alienated from God due to sin is now reconnected with God.

12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, Ephesians 2:12-14 (NIV)

The bible passage above gives us a clearer picture of the state of sinful (wo)man when separated from Christ. They are alienated from the covenants of the promise and without God in the world. But as many as have received Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal savior have received the peace of God. The peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

If we look at the context of Philippians 4:7, we will see that it was addressed to believers in Christ. In the preceding verse, Paul was encouraging the Philippians not to entertain anxiety but to rather bring their requests to God. And then, the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guide their hearts and minds.

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
