6 Bible Study Tips and Resources for the Busy Christian

Are you a busy Christian like me who hardly has time to study the bible? Then these 6 bible study tips and resources are meant for you.

As a Christian who worked in the bank for over a decade while simultaneously raising children, I understand what it means to be busy.

I understand what it means to have to wake up early to prepare the children’s meals (breakfast and lunch) and get them ready for school. Not only that, I understand what it means to have to rush out of the house in order to beat traffic. And guess what? I know what it means to be exhausted before the day’s work starts because you spent hours trying to get to work.

Those are not easy feats and nothing to be glossed over by someone just because they don’t understand it.

The struggle for busy Christians to find time to study God’s word is real and cannot be overstated. But what kept me going in those days were the precious moments I had with God. Before going into the bible study tips and resources, I would like to briefly reiterate what you probably already know.

Below is an outline of what’s covered in this post.

Please grab a cup of coffee, sit back, relax, and read with me!

6 Reasons Bible Study is so Important for Christians

Bible study nourishes the soul

There are several reasons why Bible study is so important for a Christian. Bible study is to a Christian, what food is to the body. Just as we eat to nourish our earthly bodies, Christians should study the bible to nourish their souls.

… we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)

Bible study brings about spiritual growth

When we eat, we grow and the same thing happens when we study the bible, our spirit man grows.

That’s why Apostle Peter compares God’s word to spiritual milk that we’re meant to desire like newborns desire their mother’s milk.

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good 1 Peter 2:2-3 (NIV)

Bible study will make us approved unto God

As Christians, studying the Bible is important so that we can show ourselves approved unto God. And so that we can handle scripture correctly.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

Bible study will make our way prosperous

Another reason it’s important for us Christians to study the bible is so that God will bless and prosper our ways.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

The above bible verse is God’s promise to every Christian who will spend time in God’s word.

Bible study gives us spiritual insights into God’s inheritance

Another important reason why we study the bible is that it opens our understanding to grasp God’s inheritance.

Daniel understood by studying the books that there was a set time by God when they would be free from captivity. And he was able to pray from a place of understanding.

… I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. Daniel 9:2-3 (NIV)

It’s important for us as Christians to have insight into God’s inheritance that Apostle Paul made it a prayer for the Ephesians.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, Ephesians 1:18

Bible study changes us inside out

The last importance of studying the bible I will mention is that it changes us inside out.

As it is written;

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)

Therefore, when we study our bible we are changed, we become better. Because we will realize the dos and don’ts of the Christian faith. And we become more like Jesus Christ.

6 Bible Study Tips for the Busy Christian

We have established that it is ultimately important for Christians to study the Bible regardless of their busyness. And now, I will share some of the tips that have worked for me over the years.

Set apart time daily

You are a busy Christian agreed. But, the first step to forming a daily bible study habit is to set apart time daily.

As a banker in those days, what I did was to set my alarm for 4 am daily. And once the alarm rings I go into a mode of praise and worship before studying my bible.

It wasn’t easy and nothing good comes easy but with determination, we can make a lifestyle change.

You don’t have to do what I did, do what works for you but set a time for daily Bible study.

Have a specific place away from noise

It’s always a good idea to have a specific place where you do your bible study. The place you choose should be free from noise and distraction so that you can concentrate. This will help you focus on the bible study for the day.

Meditate as you go through the day

This requires a conscious effort on your part as a busy Christian. It’s true you’re busy but it’s also true that you need God and you can’t afford to be lackadaisical. As you meditate, questions may pop up in your mind about what you read, note them down and revisit them later.

Listen to the audio bible

Although it is a known fact that bible reading/listening is not the same as bible study, it is still better than nothing.

So if all you can do is to read or listen to an audio bible, please do so because it will positively impact your life.

Listening to the audio bible was one way I caught up with completing bible reading in one year. I still listen to audio bibles on the days I wake up late. But only do so if it is safe for you, assuming you are driving.

You can listen to the audio bible while performing chores at home, commuting on the bus or train, and if safe while driving.

If all you can do as a busy Christian is to read or listen to an audio bible, please do so because it will positively impact your life. #biblestudytips #biblestudyresources #busychristian #teacupclub Click To Tweet

Use daily bible devotionals

There are so many bible devotionals out there and best of all, many of them are free. Bible devotionals exist both in printed and digital forms and they are a great resource for Bible study. The main difference with using a devotional is that someone else has done the heavy lifting. And broken down the study into a more easily comprehensible form for the readers. Although I use bible devotionals, I still make out time to study my bible because I enjoy it.

Subscribe to topical bible study plans

As a busy Christian, you may find it’s easier for you to subscribe to a topical bible study plan. With this approach, you determine the topic you want to know more about and find relevant bible study plans to subscribe to. This could be in line with the spiritual goal you have set for yourself.
