Book Review: Chocolate-Covered Cashews

Chocolate-Covered Cashews was written by Wiley Baxter and published by WestBow Press.

Several factors attracted me to this book; the title, image, color and description. I thought surely this must be an interesting book and I settled down to read it in earnest.

It wasn’t a long read and I was able to finish reading it in under an hour being an avid reader myself.

Chocolate-covered cashews is about the author Wiley Baxter’s account of his life in retrospect. In the book, he acknowledges God’s divine intervention at various times in his life.

However, the author’s accounts of his real-life stories are suggestive of the fact that he wished for more. He wished he had developed a more intimate relationship with God at an early stage.

The title which I found intriguing, was derived from an incident that occurred when he went to purchase chocolate-covered cashews. Unknown to him, his ex-wife was the store manager where he went to make his purchase. Equally unknown to him was the fact that he fathered twin girls from his ex-wife. His ex-wife did a good job of hiding the truth from him for thirty-five years. And the truth came out by divine providence, based on his presence at the store that day.

The book was written in narrative style format and wasn’t as interesting as I had envisaged. Seeing that the author is not personally known, there is no reason why accounts of his life would be interesting except where he advises a closer relationship with God. Despite the book being a narration of the authors’ life, the writing was detached and not quite engaging.

The author didn’t say much about why his first marriage failed either. One can only guess.

But if you’re looking for a real-life story to read, this is it. Otherwise, you may want to check other books.
